Monitoring Instapage’s financial health

As CEO, one of Tyson’s main responsibilities is to stay on top of Instapage’s financial health and performance.

“ChartMogul really allows me to get a general pulse of the company. In real time, I can evaluate pricing changes and the impact of product and marketing campaigns. It gives me a baseline overview of where we are today, and what it’s going to take to get to the next level.”

Using Targets, Tyson is able to set and track revenue goals. They have an overall target set for 2021, and end-of-year goals for each year leading up to that. He and the Instapage team can analyze performance each quarter to make sure they’re on track. And it’s not a purely forward-looking exercise — they also want to document historical attainment. Using historical revenue data and Targets, Tyson can talk to current and potential investors and demonstrate how the business has successfully achieved goals over time.

Instapage’s CFO is also an avid user. Using ChartMogul, he can get a more in-depth perspective on individual customer plans, lifetime value, and churn, which he then uses to do a financial modeling and help define departmental budgets.

“Being able to monitor your financial health is the most important thing you can do as a growth-stage company. It brings perspective to everything else you do. When you’re at a growth stage, everything is about economic fine-tuning and progressing towards scalability of what’s already working. And your financial health is really the foundational layer of all that.”

Managing and analyzing core SaaS metrics

While many of the companies we speak to count MRR as their North Star metric, Instapage prioritizes churn.

“Gross churn is our number-one focus. It’s kind of the thing that evokes the most fear, right? If we’re not focusing on the thing that scares us the most, then we’re not focusing on the right thing.”

He also spends time examining average revenue per account (ARPA) and lifetime value (LTV). As Instapage continues to move upmarket, he sees these two metrics as an important indicator of success and more meaningful than raw customer count. “We’re enterprise-ready, so it’s fine for customer count to decrease for some time as long as ARPA and LTV are increasing faster.”

Putting metrics into action

Cohort analysis can help shine a light on how subscriber behavior changes over time. When examining retention segmented by customer plan, Instapage noticed that one plan had a retention rate that was almost twice as high as other plans. The company decided to run an experiment: offer only that plan, plus an enterprise plan. They hypothesized that consolidating their self-service plans into one, straightforward plan would help more qualified prospects quickly assess product fit and make a purchase decision. Additionally, those that may have opted for a less expensive plan only to churn out after two or three months would be less inclined to purchase from the get-go.

After an initial test, Instapage rolled out the pricing to all of its users and by all accounts the results have been tremendous. “The churn rate on this plan is only a third of what the churn on our previous plan was. Being able to evaluate those cohort charts in ChartMogul led to this experiment.”
