{"id":17632,"date":"2021-04-22T12:25:48","date_gmt":"2021-04-22T10:25:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chartmogul.com\/blog\/?p=17632"},"modified":"2024-04-26T15:36:52","modified_gmt":"2024-04-26T13:36:52","slug":"its-effing-chartmogul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chartmogul.com\/blog\/its-effing-chartmogul\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s F***ing ChartMogul"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Two very cool things happened to ChartMogul in March.<br><br>The first happened on March 10th, when longtime ChartMogul customer <a href=\"https:\/\/slidebean.com\/\">Slidebean<\/a> published a video titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DceOkRXHqf8\">The Ultimate Guide to SaaS KPIs<\/a>. We knew this was coming, as a few weeks earlier had agreed to sponsor the video. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what we didn\u2019t anticipate was the reaction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The video had over 10,000 views in the first four days and, as of writing this, over 15,000 views (which is a lot considering this is a video about SaaS metrics).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Slidebean has put in the work over the past years building a large and engaged audience of over 270 thousand subscribers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I highly recommend checking out the video (embedded below) \u2014&nbsp;we\u2019re now using it as part of our own internal onboarding for new employees to help get them up to speed on SaaS metrics faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p class=\"video-container\"><youtube-video videoid=\"DceOkRXHqf8\"><\/youtube-video><\/p>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>For more awesome content from Slidebean be sure to <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UC4bq21IPPbpu0Qrsl7LW0sw\"><em>subscribe to their channel<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second, perhaps even cooler thing came three days later when <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/agazdecki\">Andrew Gazdecki<\/a> of <a href=\"https:\/\/microacquire.com\/\">MicroAcquire<\/a> tweeted out this video:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Caution, NSFW!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p class=\"video-container\"><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">It\u2019s official, $350,000 in ARR!<br><br>No revenue graph this time.<br><br>Got Russ Hanneman to clear something up for everyone. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/sAkzL96Fpa\">pic.twitter.com\/sAkzL96Fpa<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Andrew Gazdecki (@agazdecki) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/agazdecki\/status\/1370549604366700544?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 13, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For those of you not intimately familiar with HBO\u2019s hit show Silicon Valley, this is the actor (Chris Diamantopoulos) who played flash billionaire investor Russ Hanneman. Russ was probably the most obnoxious (and one of the funniest) characters on SV and patron of his own Tequila brand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2XxwhMcUjYU\">Tres Comas<\/a>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-but-why-this-video\">But why this video?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For years, SaaS founders have been posting their ChartMogul screenshots on Twitter and LinkedIn to inspire other founders, promote their startup, or just to have fun and show off! Why not!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since we <a href=\"https:\/\/chartmogul.com\/blog\/iphone-app-live\/\">released our iPhone app<\/a> back in December, the frequency of these tweets started to increase. Perhaps the ease of taking and sharing screengrabs on an iPhone helped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve been advised many times that we should \u2018brand\u2019 our charts or build a \u2018share\u2019 button into our app so people seeing these shared charts would know they\u2019re coming from ChartMogul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, being stubborn about maintaining clean aesthetics and never prioritizing a \u2018share\u2019 button meant that when popular bootstrapper Andrew Gadzecki started regularly posting screenshots from MicroAcquire\u2019s ChartMogul account, people constantly asked him \u201cWhat app is that?\u201d, \u201cWhat are you using to measure your revenue?\u201d Like&#8230; A LOT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrew got so sick of this that he hired <s>Russ Hanneman<\/s> Chris Diamantopoulos via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cameo.com\/\">Cameo<\/a> to record a video to answer the question once and for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The video blew up and had over 17,000 views in the first two days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To say thanks, we made Andrew a custom T-Shirt!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/agazdecki\/status\/1379231354236194816\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-it-all-mean\">What does it all mean?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These two videos produced about 72 additional trial signups on <em>our<\/em> site in the four days following their release. For comparison, that is more trial signups than several months of experimenting with outbound sales yielded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were already considering shuttering our outbound program, but the reaction to this single week of cool and fun stuff in March helped accelerate our decision. We\u2019ll write about why we couldn\u2019t get outbound working in another post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do something really hard that our audience often doesn\u2019t appreciate (unsolicited email), when a couple of cool videos can produce better results in just a few days?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was a good lesson for us, and it\u2019s something that I think other founders would find valuable too. With <a href=\"https:\/\/chartmogul.com\/blog\/types-of-saas\/\">so much competition<\/a> in SaaS and so many companies employing the tested <em>playbooks<\/em> (content, SEO, paid, ABM, etc.), brand is becoming an increasingly more important tool to drive growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, you have to learn how to build your brand, invest in it, and ultimately, how to use it to grow your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From now on, we\u2019re going to focus on doing more cool fun stuff. We enjoy it, our audience enjoys it, and when it works, it works better than the tired playbooks of old.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best marketing is free. Tesla (and Elon Musk) are doing it right \u2014 make sure you have the best product, have fun, people will want to write about you, and the rest will follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>P.S.
