{"id":182,"date":"2014-11-04T14:02:37","date_gmt":"2014-11-04T13:02:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chartmogul.com\/?p=182"},"modified":"2023-08-09T17:18:24","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T15:18:24","slug":"why-we-chose-berlin-over-london","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chartmogul.com\/blog\/why-we-chose-berlin-over-london\/","title":{"rendered":"Why we chose Berlin over London"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>This is how it happened&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>Once we&#8217;d made the decision that I&#8217;d leave behind a fantastic position in a successful company (a story for another day) and start my <a href=\"https:\/\/chartmogul.com\/blog\/2014\/11\/chartmogul-launches-beta\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">own business<\/a> the next logical question was, where should we base ourselves?<\/p>\n<h2>Our\u00a0loose criteria<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Had to be a &#8216;western&#8217; country (North America, Europe or ANZ) &#8211; as they\u00a0comprise the\u00a0majority of the early-adopter market for SaaS it made sense to be in one of those regions.<\/li>\n<li>An established technology hub\u00a0with all the benefits a local\u00a0ecosystem can bring.<\/li>\n<li>A nice place to live\/good quality of life.<\/li>\n<li>Cost. \u00a0The lower our\u00a0cost of living,\u00a0the\u00a0more money we&#8217;d have available to spend on\u00a0building the product and business.<\/li>\n<li>Be relatively fast and painless to obtain any necessary visas. Michelle is South Korean and I&#8217;m British.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We quickly reduced\u00a0the best two options down to either London or Berlin (while there are many advantages to being in SV, the time and costs involved in securing visas for an early stage startup made it an unviable option at this stage).<\/p>\n<p>These were the Pros and Cons of each as we understood them back in June:<\/p>\n<h2>London<\/h2>\n<h3>Pros<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>I&#8217;d lived in London and loved it, I have family and friends there and an existing network.<\/li>\n<li>It&#8217;s a big tech-hub, has a large talent pool, plenty of early adopters, a media with a global reach and is in close proximity to a lot of\u00a0financial capital.<\/li>\n<li>Heathrow Airport &#8211; in London you\u00a0are usually a direct flight away from anywhere you need to go.<\/li>\n<li>Ease of doing business &#8211; I was already familiar with many\u00a0of the aspects of incorporating\u00a0and running a business in the UK.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Cons<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Costs are very high, particularly housing.<\/li>\n<li>Visas &#8211; Despite being a British citizen myself, obtaining a UK visa for Michelle would be a slow and painful (if you&#8217;re not a fan of bureaucracy) process and involve us\u00a0travelling to Korea, applying at the British embassy in Seoul and then waiting for ~3 months to (hopefully) be approved.<\/li>\n<li>Quality of life &#8211; while London is culturally very rich and can be a\u00a0lot of fun, it doesn&#8217;t have a particularly\u00a0high\u00a0quality of life when compared to many other cities in the\u00a0developed world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Berlin<\/h2>\n<h3>Pros<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Costs &#8211; renting an apartment is approximately\u00a01\/3 that of London and many other costs like transportation are also much lower.<\/li>\n<li>Tech hub &#8211; I&#8217;d heard from <a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2013\/07\/20\/will-the-real-berlin-please-stand-up-a-vc-puts-the-citys-tech-boom-in-context\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TechCrunch<\/a> and elsewhere\u00a0that there was a vibrant tech scene in Berlin, I knew <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SoundCloud<\/a>, 6Wunderkinder and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pointninecap.com\/portfolio\">Point9 Capital<\/a>\u00a0(Christoph Janz was an early\u00a0investor in Zendesk)\u00a0were based there. \u00a0I wasn&#8217;t sure what it would really be like though\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/blog\/2013\/oct\/25\/berlin-tech-startup-scene-10-things\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">some reviews<\/a> were actively off-putting.<\/li>\n<li>Quality of life &#8211; When we\u00a0visited Berlin for the first time we both fell in love with it instantly.\u00a0 While it&#8217;s no Vienna or Melbourne, Berlin still regularly ranks in the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World's_most_liveable_cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">top 20<\/a> best cities globally for quality of life and I&#8217;d encourage anyone to visit.<\/li>\n<li>Visas &#8211; as a British citizen I can live in Germany without a visa. \u00a0Amazingly\u00a0it turned\u00a0out that securing a residency for Michelle would be\u00a0far easier in Germany than in my native country, and we could fly to Germany together and apply when we got there (a huge bonus). \u00a0In the end the total cost turned out to be just 28 Euros (yes seriously!) for a 5 year residency visa, and the paperwork requirements\u00a0were reasonable.\n<ul>\n<li>While this is a somewhat rare\u00a0situation to be in it does hint\u00a0that we might not have too much trouble\u00a0when\u00a0the time comes to relocate overseas candidates\u00a0to our Berlin office.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Cons<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s smaller than London &#8211;\u00a0not in itself a bad thing, but there are benefits to being in a large metropolis when doing business.<\/li>\n<li>No Hub Airport\u00a0&#8211; that means\u00a0no\u00a0direct flights to San Francisco.<\/li>\n<li>I couldn&#8217;t (and still can barely) understand a word of German (luckily 9\/10 Berliners seem to speak English)&#8230;the biggest obstacle this poses is filling out\u00a0forms.<\/li>\n<li>Lack of an existing network\u00a0&#8211; although thanks to\u00a0Point9 and their family\u00a0of companies, who&#8217;ve\u00a0been\u00a0incredibly open and supportive since we\u00a0arrived, this hasn&#8217;t turned out to be such a problem&#8230;and other local founders\u00a0have also reached out to welcome us to the startup community in Berlin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the end the pros of Berlin (or perhaps the cons of London) tipped Berlin\u00a0in our favour and we&#8217;ve never looked back.<\/p>\n<p>We did decide\u00a0(like SoundCloud) to incorporate in the UK while staying headquartered in Berlin\u00a0in order to benefit from the regulatory framework and ease of doing business that the UK does score higher on.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year Michelle and I were living in Manila, Philippines &#8211; I&#8217;d\u00a0been having an amazing\u00a0time\u00a0running Zendesk&#8217;s Asia business for the past\u00a0three years.
