{"id":3185,"date":"2016-01-14T15:25:14","date_gmt":"2016-01-14T14:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/chartmogul.com\/blog\/?p=3185"},"modified":"2023-08-09T21:01:56","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T19:01:56","slug":"using-ahoy-with-chartmogul","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chartmogul.com\/blog\/using-ahoy-with-chartmogul\/","title":{"rendered":"Tracking Attribution with Ahoy and ChartMogul Segmentation"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Introducing Ahoy<\/h1>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ankane\/ahoy\" target=\"_blank\">Ahoy<\/a> is an open source project developed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instacart.com\" target=\"_blank\">Instacart<\/a>. \u00a0According to its Github description:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Ahoy provides a solid foundation to track visits and events in Ruby, JavaScript, and native apps.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I like to think of it as a bit\u00a0like having the\u00a0backend of Google Analytics and instead of rendering charts\u00a0in a UI, it dumps everything into a database of your choosing\u00a0(we have a dedicated box with PostgreSQL for this purpose). This means that we can more easily access information on our visitors.<\/p>\n<h1>What do we want to achieve with Ahoy and ChartMogul?<\/h1>\n<p>Using the data gathered by Ahoy, we can start to track the earliest stages of our\u00a0user funnel and get a more complete picture on where our customers are coming from (attribution), more specifically tracking the point at which they first come into contact with our brand.<\/p>\n<p>Most SaaS businesses today partake in a wide range of marketing activities spread across a large number of platforms on the web. The ability to track how each of these impact the bottom line\u00a0is critical when optimizing your\u00a0marketing strategy.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>I want to be able to answer these 5\u00a0questions inside my ChartMogul account:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Which discovery sources produce the most paying\u00a0customers?<\/li>\n<li>Which discovery sources produce customers with the highest MRR or LTV?<\/li>\n<li>Which landing pages ultimately produce the most paying\u00a0customers?<\/li>\n<li>Which conversion sources produce the most paying\u00a0customers?<\/li>\n<li>Which discovery sources produce customers with the lowest churn rate?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It should be quite obvious to anyone working in a marketing or revenue generation role at a subscription business\u00a0that being able to answer these questions (even &#8216;somewhat&#8217; accurately) would be extremely valuable.<\/p>\n<h1>How it&#8217;s going to work<\/h1>\n<ol>\n<li>You embed some JavaScript from Ahoy on your website, just like you do for Google analytics.<\/li>\n<li>This JS tracks all the same visitor data that Google Analytics tracks and sends the raw\u00a0data to the Ahoy application which writes the visitor event data to a database of your choosing. \u00a0The JS also cookies the user so all data collected is associated with the same person (or at least the same browser\/machine).<\/li>\n<li>As soon as any visitor\u00a0signs up for an account (trial, paid, freemium, doesn&#8217;t matter), you&#8217;ll then want to\u00a0fire off a webhook from your\u00a0backend to the Ahoy application informing it\u00a0that a user has\u00a0signed up for a free trial &#8211; the webhook would collect the Ahoy identifier from the cookie\u00a0as well as the internal ID of the user\u00a0account.\u00a0As soon as that&#8217;s done all the previously collected data about\u00a0the site visitor will be associated with the newly created user\u00a0account.<\/li>\n<li>We can then send the relevant pieces of data to ChartMogul using the <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.chartmogul.com\/reference#introduction-enrichment-api\" target=\"_blank\">Enrichment API<\/a>,\u00a0each time time a trial converts to a paying customer &#8211; if the visitor\u00a0doesn&#8217;t\u00a0have a free trial then the feedback loop is even faster and you can associate the visitor data with the customer as soon as they signup.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Setting up Ahoy<\/h2>\n<p>There are three main\u00a0parts to setting up Ahoy:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Setup a separate server and database and <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/ankane\/ahoy#installation\" target=\"_blank\">install the Ahoy application<\/a> there.<\/li>\n<li>Paste\u00a0the Ahoy javascript embed into your website&#8217;s code.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;ll need to custom code a callback\/webhook that will fire each time a visitor signs up on your website and a user account is created. \u00a0The idea here is to &#8216;close the loop&#8217; MRR values in ChartMogul<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Some limitations<\/h2>\n<p>As always, when tracking and attributing users on the web, you&#8217;re always going to run into a set of common issues.\u00a0People commonly use different devices and browsers on the web, and using cookies to track users across\u00a0those devices isn&#8217;t really feasible. You should bare in mind that the data you get will never be 100% accurate. You&#8217;ll end up with some traffic that looks like first-time visits and\u00a0will actually be users who have, for example, come into contact with your brand on a mobile device and then moved to a desktop browser.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, it&#8217;s clear that the insights you can gain from implementing and using such a system vastly outweighs its\u00a0drawbacks.
