How can your company get there, too?<\/p>\n<p>It has to stay alive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cMake it work, make it grow, keep it relevant.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That was the topic of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/destraynor?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Des Traynor\u2019s<\/a> keynote talk in Berlin, his only European visit on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intercom.io\/insideintercom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Inside Intercom\u2019s World Tour<\/a>. From the stage of the beautiful Delphi Theater, Des \u2014 co-founder, Chief Strategy Officer and VP Marketing at Intercom \u2014 laid out survival guidelines for any product in today\u2019s evolving tech scene. His motivation is simple.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe didn\u2019t come this far, to only come this far.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No matter how far your company has come, your product will always face threats of disruption, of being made obsolete. And it\u2019s imperative that founders, execs, anyone who cares about the product, to stay honest about this fact. Des admitted it to the crowd.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s when you\u2019re at your most successful point that you feel most vulnerable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ironic, right? But you know what happens when you rest on your laurels\u2026 You get taken down.<\/p>\n<p>As such, nearly all key points of keeping a product alive came down to the character of the team behind the product itself. It\u2019s essential for any product team, at any scale of company, to embody these three things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Self and industry awareness<\/li>\n<li>Forward thinking<\/li>\n<li>Decisive action<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h1>Self and industry awareness<\/h1>\n<p><strong>\u201cThere\u2019s no email from YC telling you it\u2019s over.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shifts in tech are subtle, he says. If you\u2019re not staying attuned to every move in the industry and shift of your customer\u2019s needs, then <strong>your product is already obsolete.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You must pay close attention to the new technologies creeping up behind you, even if you are wildly outperforming them at the moment. Because those are the ones who will disrupt you. Without that awareness and attention \u2014 taking innovators and upcomers seriously \u2014 you\u2019ll be swiftly overtaken. And another great example: SMS vs. WhatsApp.<\/p>\n<p>The API trend is a perfect example of how subtle shifts can compound to topple industries. Now so many APIs exist that brand new companies can use them as building blocks to tower over everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>Des explained how someone could integrate <a href=\"https:\/\/stripe.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Stripe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shopify.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Shopify<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/postmates.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Postmates<\/a>, and voila \u2014 \u201cincorporate and run a same day delivery online store in 30 minutes.\u201d Alex MacCaw, CEO of <a href=\"https:\/\/clearbit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Clearbit<\/a>, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/chartmogul.com\/blog\/clearbit-alex-maccaw\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made the same point<\/a> about Uber, which was initially build on four APIs. If the right APIs are \u201cin place and you can build on top of them, that\u2019s when you can build the world\u2019s biggest company,\u201d Alex says.<\/p>\n<h1>Forward thinking<\/h1>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe present is the past.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t base your product decisions on how your customers act today; base the decisions on how your customers will act tomorrow. If you\u2019re thinking about today, then <strong>your product is already obsolete.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Founders and product teams must constantly ask themselves: \u201cDoes [this technology] make it cheaper, faster, or easier for our customers to make progress in their lives?\u201d<\/p>\n<h1>Decisive action<\/h1>\n<p><strong>\u201cCustomers don\u2019t wait around while you\u2019re writing your JIRA tickets.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Move quickly; speed is key. \u201cGood enough\u201d is good for now, if you can make a product improvement immediately. If you\u2019re waiting for some element to be perfect, then <strong>your product is already obsolete.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So on this note, he advises to not discount a product because of poor design; it could still solve a problem for you in an amazing way. On the other hand, some products can \u201cbe polished as hell,\u201d but not actually be that useful.<\/p>\n<h1>Other things to keep in mind to keep your product alive<\/h1>\n<h3>Cost is about more than money<\/h3>\n<p>For your customers, cost includes any time and effort spent getting to a successful use of your product. e.g.- training employees, educating customers. It\u2019s all an investment for them.<\/p>\n<h3>Use a UI your customers already know<\/h3>\n<p>Customers can either jump right in and be familiar with what you\u2019re offering, or they can have to learn it all from scratch. \u201cThat\u2019s why good design is propagated over and over.\u201d While you\u2019re busy reinventing the wheel, your customers are moving on.<\/p>\n<h3>Your product is a system, not a destination<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThis is a post-app world.\u201d It\u2019s not just a set of screens that you\u2019re solving for; it\u2019s disseminating information to your customer. It\u2019s a matter of how, when, and where your customer interacts with your product. With the system model, change is less threatening, because you can adapt and expand.
