How do ChartMogul and RevenueStory handle messy billing data?
RevenueStory reports what Chargebee records. ChartMogul lets you set the rules behind the numbers and correct the records that distort them, without changing anything in Chargebee.
Data settings. ChartMogul lets you choose when churn is recognized, whether past-due subscriptions auto-churn and after how many days, whether MRR is reported when an invoice is issued, partially paid, or fully paid, and whether voided, refunded, and written-off invoices are excluded. RevenueStory lets you choose whether non-recurring add-ons and one-time coupons count toward MRR, and publishes no setting for when churn is recognized or when past-due subscriptions churn.
Data editing. Chargebee is built to invoice customers and collect payment, and billing records often carry decisions that made sense for billing but not for reporting. For example, a mid-term move to annual billing might be booked as an ad hoc one-time charge, which RevenueStory excludes from MRR. ChartMogul lets you correct records at two levels: adjust a subscription's MRR directly, or edit, add, or disable invoices, line items, and transactions, such as reclassifying that one-time charge as recurring. Every change has an update history, and nothing is written back to Chargebee. In RevenueStory, the fix means changing the record in Chargebee itself, and its FAQ notes that deleting a subscription removes it from all metrics, current and historical.
Duplicate customers and migrations. A company can end up with two Chargebee accounts, or arrive from another billing system with its history split in two. ChartMogul detects duplicates on company name, domain, external ID, email, primary contact email, or custom attributes, merges them manually or automatically, and links old and new subscriptions into one continuous history. RevenueStory publishes no customer merge or subscription-linking feature.
How do ChartMogul and RevenueStory reports compare?
Both cover MRR, churn, and retention from your Chargebee data. ChartMogul goes deeper on cohorts and segmentation, and includes them on every plan.
Cohorts. ChartMogul has eight cohort reports at daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual granularity, filtered by plan, region, or your own custom attributes, and clicking any cell lists the customers behind it. RevenueStory's MRR Retention Cohort shows monthly cohorts over the last 24 months, and custom cohorts can be built in Report Builder, which the Standard version limits to five reports.
Segments and custom fields. ChartMogul segments on any custom attribute, tag, or HubSpot property on every plan, imported from HubSpot, the API, or CSV. RevenueStory filters on Chargebee's customer, subscription, and product fields and saves filters as segments. Custom fields need RevenueStory Premium, which maps them into a few fixed slots, such as customer type and business type, and customer-level reporting, alerts beyond one per site, and goals need Premium too.
Where can you send ChartMogul and RevenueStory data?
Chargebee syncs billing records to HubSpot and, through third-party tools, to a data warehouse. ChartMogul sends the calculated metrics as well, so every system works from the same numbers.
Data warehouses. ChartMogul syncs to Snowflake, BigQuery, and Redshift, plus Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, and Google Cloud Storage, on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule. It sends calculated data, such as MRR and CMRR movements, and normalized source data, including invoices, transactions, subscription events, plans, and customers with their attributes. Chargebee's raw data can reach a warehouse through Stitch or other ETL tools, and RevenueStory reports download as CSV, but RevenueStory's calculated metrics have no warehouse destination.
HubSpot. Chargebee's own HubSpot integration syncs subscriptions, invoices, and plans into HubSpot. ChartMogul adds the analytics layer: it writes cleaned metrics such as MRR to the matching HubSpot company record daily, matches on company name, domain, external ID, email, or any custom property, and imports HubSpot properties hourly so you can segment revenue by them.
MCP. Both have MCP servers, built for different jobs. Chargebee's look up billing records and can perform write actions, which suits billing operations. ChartMogul's remote MCP server installs from Claude's connector directory and ChatGPT's app directory, with more than 80 read-only tools that answer questions about MRR, churn, cohorts, and customers in Claude and ChatGPT.
How do the AI features in ChartMogul and RevenueStory compare?
ChartMogul AI answers open-ended questions about your revenue in the app, drawing on billing data, HubSpot properties, connected email, and product activity. Chargebee Copilot, in public beta, answers questions about Chargebee features and looks up customers, subscriptions, invoices, and transactions, and its documentation doesn't list RevenueStory metrics such as churn or retention among the data it can use.
ChartMogul connects a mailbox over Gmail, Outlook, or IMAP and logs customer correspondence against the right account, and ChartMogul.js records when each user was last seen in your app. So when you ask which customers are at risk, the answer weighs each customer's MRR trend alongside what they've been saying and whether their team is still logging in.
Can you automate actions when a subscription changes?
Chargebee sends webhooks and connects to Zapier, so a billing event, such as a scheduled cancellation, can trigger an action in another tool. ChartMogul's workflows run in the app and act on the customer relationship.
When a customer schedules a cancellation, the account manager can be assigned a task and the customer can receive an email while the decision is still fresh. When an account's MRR crosses a threshold, it can be assigned to a different account manager automatically. These are only two examples. Workflows can start from many other changes to a customer's subscription, from a new trial to a subscription going past due, and each can combine tasks, emails, and email sequences to match how your team works.
How do you switch from RevenueStory to ChartMogul?
ChartMogul connects to Chargebee as a billing source and imports your full history of subscriptions, invoices, and transactions, so your MRR history does not start from zero.
To confirm the numbers line up, compare RevenueStory's MRR reports with ChartMogul's for the same months. Expect some differences, usually from calculation rules: how non-recurring add-ons and one-time coupons are treated, when churn is recognized, and how past-due subscriptions are handled. The ChartMogul team will help identify and explain any discrepancies.
What does RevenueStory offer that ChartMogul doesn't?
A few conveniences that come from being built into Chargebee. RevenueStory is included with paid Chargebee plans, needs nothing connected or configured, refreshes every 15 to 30 minutes, and ships more than 150 ready-made reports across ten default dashboards covering finance, sales, customer success, and churn, which can be emailed on a schedule. RevenueStory Premium adds consolidated reporting across several Chargebee sites.
None of that changes what the reports are built on. RevenueStory reports only what Chargebee records, with no way to correct those records for reporting, merge duplicate customers, or include customers billed through another system.
